This is a Happy Day

I've been following the story of Genarlow Wilson for about a year and a half now, and today the Georgia Supreme Court finally did the right thing. It was two years and an unnecessary conviction too late, but it's finally over. This young man can be free now.

This story is a classic case of why some Americans have so little faith in our judicial system. Today, however, the judicial system redeemed itself in a small way, and I can't help but smile and feel extraordinarily happy for Genarlow Wilson and his family. He refused to plead guilty for a crime he didn't committ and he refused to take any deals from the prosecutor because he did not want to be labeled as a child molestor. He did the right thing, and now so did the state of Georgia.

"The federal government has become gigantic, unbelieveably expensive, insanely complicated, and absurdly bossy. Yet often this same government is sincerely trying, in its clumsy federal way, to do the right thing, to help us, much as King Kong sincerely believed he was helping Fay Wray when he carried her against her will up the Empire State Building."

You will have to explain to me how our government tried to help anyone in this case.

The purpose of creating the law(I'm assuming) was to protect children from the sexual preadators. I think you will agree that that is a good thing. That is how the government was trying to help us. It was obviously a misapplied and poorly designed law, as this case demonstrates. I'm not trying to defend the government here, this quote was just the first thing I thought of when I read the post.

You never laugh at my jokes...

And I'm just super-sensitive to this particular case. =)
