Pre-Weekend Sports Thoughts

My blog has turned into a complete sports talk blog. That's okay, because this is a great time for sports. One of the best times actually. I'll blog about something else someday, but my mind is only on sports right now. Just deal.

~ I want to comment on LeBron wearing a Yankee hat to the Cleveland game the other day. I know this story falls in the category of stupid and pointless sports stories, so I won't waste too much time with it. I thought about if a Piston's player wore a different team's hat to a playoff game, and I don't think I'd be bothered by it. The players are all from different cities and have the right to wear the cap they want (which goes against the whole "wherever you live, that's your team" argument, but oh well). Like Tom Brady wearing a Yankee cap. He's not from Boston. He's a California boy, coming to New England via Michigan. Not a big deal. People are up in arms about LeBron being born close to Cleveland, so they expect him to have an allegiance to the city. And I'm sure he did at some point. But speaking from experience, you can change the team you root for, even if you were born near a city with a team. Now was LeBron making the smartest decision in the world? Probably not. After all, the fans in Cleveland are the ones coming to his basketball games and buying his jerseys (although LeBron does quite fine making money off other fans outside of Cleveland, I'm sure). It's not good to be not liked by your hometown fans, so image wise, not smart on LeBron's part. I think Cleveland should just trade the guy to Detroit for a second round pick in next years draft. Sounds like it'd be for the best.

~Michigan State's next three games:
Home against Northwestern
Home against Indiana
Away against Ohio State

We need to hold serve and win at home against NU and IU. There's no reason we shouldn't beat those two teams. I expect the games to be close, but I expect to win. I want to be 2-1 in the conference, and 6-1 overall heading into Columbus on the 20th. If we can do that and pull off a monumental upset against OSU, this year will be considered a success for me. We'd already have enough wins for a bowl game, with a top-ten win to boot. Plus, we'd have won the games we were supposed to. Predictions? 38-20 over Northwestern, 28-24 over Indiana, and 17-20 loss against OSU. I hope I'm wrong on that last one.

~Lions against the Skins this weekend. This is a big game for the Lions. I was looking ahead at their schedule, and we get Tampa Bay at home, Chicago on the road, and Denver at home for the next three. Tampa Bay is good this year, Chicago should be better at home (they could have easily won last week in Detroit had they minimized their mistakes), and Denver has the corners to suppress our passing attack more than any other team. We win against Washington (which would also get us a nice road win), we'd be 4-1, and if we take just one out of the next three, we'd still be 5-3 and in a good position. I'll take that. To be halfway through the season and have a winning record, and a projected 10-6 record (Kitna- looking good with that prediction!), puts us in a good spot. All that being said, I hope for a damn shootout in Washington, for my fantasy team's sake. 56-55 Lions. Also, this is rematch of the NFC Championship game (from way back in the early 90's). The last one the Lion's have been to.

~ Did anybody else hear about Kitna converting 20 members of the Lions' team into followers of the Lord almighty? I found this interesting. While I'm not much of a religious man, I did like reading that. It shows me that the Lions have a true football leader in Kitna, and they are coming together and gelling as a team. All for one. You know what that means? That means when the game is on the line, we have someone we can trust and rally around, and we're going to stick together and not fold. This team is fun. They are going to be competitive all year, they have an explosive offense, and for the first time in years they are an actual TEAM. I really do wish I could watch more games. I am really excited to see this offense with all of its pieces on the field at once. Kitna, Williams, Johnson, Fuerry, McDonald, Jones, Bell, Ducket...I want the whole kit and caboodle, and I want Martz to unleash his offensive monster onto the rest of the league.

~Upset Special: Bears over the Packers. I gave you Arizona over Pittsburgh, now go put your money on the Bears this week. Favre can't keep up this pace he's on forever. They have no run game. Griese can't be as bad as last week. Green Bay's early schedule (Philly, Giants, San Diego, and Minny) looks good on paper, but have a combined 5-11 record- not good- and they were all close games. Most importantly, the Bears need this game more than Green Bay. I'll take the desperate, something-to-prove, Bears over a Green Bay team basking in their early success glory.

~Michael Crabtree for Heisman! Today he goes up against Iowa State. I'm going to guess another big game for him, since he is the absolute shit. Prediction:
155 Yards Receiving
10 Catches
3 Touchdowns

Heisman! Heisman! Heisman!

~I still will not speak of fantasy. Except for that time I mentioned it earlier. Boo fantasy.

I am thrilled that you brought up LeBron. I would have been pissed if I saw a Piston sitting front row at a Tiger's World Series game last year wearing a Cardinals hat. It is like a big FU to the fans. Fine to root for the other team, fine to wear the other team's hat on the street, not fine to wear the hat in the front row of the stadium.

In Peter Gammons' words "If I were a Cavs fan I would be embarrased that he's so immature, that his need for attention is so great that he had to do that last night"

I too would love a shootout in Washington since I now have 4 Lions on my fantasy team.

Thoughts on the Phillies? I haven't watched them yet.

Crabtree isn't even the most likely Heisman candidate on his own team. Compare his numbers (60 catchs 14 TDs in 5 games) to Charles Rogers' Biletnikoff Award winning season - 68 catches 13 TDs (I remember this still from his Madden commercial). Ok, I'm a believer.

I don't really care which team LeBron roots for, but it is bad PR for a "worldwide icon" in the making. I think it would be hilarious if the entire Cleveland Indians team shows up for the first Cavs game decked out in the opposing teams gear. That would be fun.

I couldn't watch the MSU game since it was the big 10 network. We lost in overtime, and neither team can play defense. That's all I know.

Lions need to shutout to the Redskins. And score a few defensive touchdowns. Throw a few sacks in there too.

Let me just say that I am crushed by MSU losing to Northwestern...I can hear the cries from East Lansing already..."Same old Spartans"...And here I thought we were making some great strides or something. Damn me for getting my hopes up.

Adam- I agree with what you said about LeBron. He has the right to, but he just shouldn't have, for the sake of his fans and image.

Kev- The Indians team should totally do that! It might make light of the situation and put it to rest. And that would be so great to see =).

The Phillies have looked awful. The first game Howard and Utley were 0 for 8 with 7 K's. They looked like deer in the headlights. They almost look like a team that is just happy to be in the playoffs. Overcoming the Mets and ending a 15 year playoff drought seems good enough for them. Still, a pathetic display of baseball.

Graham Harrell, the Tech quarterback, has 2300 passing yards, 24 TDs, 2 Ints and a 170 something rating. Those are great numbers, and he leads the nation in touchdowns. He doesn't, however, lead the nation in passing yards, completion percentage, and qb rating. Basically he's a great quarterback, but not the best. Michael Crabtree leads the nation at his position in EVERYTHING. He is making Mr. Harrell look damn good.

Update on Crabtree: Halfway through the second quarter:
5 Receptions
79 Yards
2 Touchdowns
Heisman! Heisman! Heisman!

Um, how good am I?

Michael Crabtree:
154 Yards
10 Receptions
3 Touchdowns

I was 1 YARD OFF!!!

Heisman! Heisman! Heisman!

And the strange thing is I haven't heard one damn thing on him. He has 350 yards receiving and 8 more TDs than any receiver and 30 points more than anyone else in the country.

The receiving records in a season by the way:
Catches: 142 Manny Hazard, Houston, 1989
Yards: 2,060 Trevor Insley, Nevada, 1999
TDs: 27 Troy Edwards, La Tech 1998

What is the common link between all of those record holders? None of them got Heisman votes.

Crabtree is projected for 140, 2,148 and 34.

Why will he not come close to reaching that? Texas A&M, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma are 5 of his 6 remaining games. Still, he should be getting at least some cred.

Today's my day to go to the slaughterhouse and play Stacey. My one glimmer of hope is that there is a decent swirling wind right now in Cleveland.

Ah, the Stacey Slaughterhouse. Been there. I've been chopped up, packaged, and sent to the meat market. Not a great experience. Good luck with that wind! Although Brady already has 2 TDs at halftime...

I know he's not going to win, nor will he get mentioned. He's in a pass-happy offense and he's a freshman. If he keeps up his current pace, I'll be shocked. Like you pointed out, he hasn't played the toughest part of his schedule yet. Still, to be on pace to break or come close to breaking every major receiving record deserves some recognition.

I'll still hype him every week, because he's my favorite Heisman candidate. All those other guys play on decent to good big name programs. I'll champion the little freshman from Tech who's playing out of this world.
