A schmorgesborg of random thoughts I've had over the holidays!
~Since these are random thoughts, let me start with something random. You know Jay Z's song, 'Empire State of Mind'? Decent song, but I love his thinking. In one line he's referring to his courtside seats at Nets and Knicks games, and saying that he, "could trip a referee". Haha, finally someone that thinks like I do on the matter of tripping people! You know, I could have tripped Tom Izzo before...
~Family update #1: My mom recently had surgery on her knee. She's had a lot of pain the last few years with her knee (not to get too graphic, because it grosses me out, but she's had a lot of bone-on-bone grinding causing her pain) and finally got the corrective surgery. Now she's supposed to be laid up for the next few months, as she can hardly move around. She's not even allowed to go to work, which I think is awesome. 3 months off work!?! Where can I get a job like that?
~Family update #2: At my grandma's house in Detroit we watched some old home videos (circa 1991) of an old Christmas and pool party. It was kind of weird seeing myself as a kid in moving pictures (my parents never took home movies of us kids). I mean I like to think I have a good memory of things I did when I was a kid, but it's hard to remember how I actually acted. One thing that those videos pointed out was that I was rough on Colin. I constantly wrestled and fought him. There was video of my grandma opening a present and in the background you could hear, "Quarterback sack!!!" and then a large crashing sound. I felt bad for Colin.
~Family update #3: Okay, so Grace does not like being called some things. Apparently if you call her a 'pig', 'cow', or 'fat', she gets offended. But I only call her these names when she asks the question, "Am I fat"? She is so skinny that the only reasonable response is to give her a completely unreasonable one- like saying she's as big as a cow. My new nickname for her the past couple of weeks has been 'pigcow'. I used it in Michigan with my family and it really caught on, although now I think she's getting tired of it...
~So I used to be terrible to my brother, and I call my girlfriend a pigcow. I'm an asshole.
~I told Grace this morning that I wished Tim Tebow and Tyler Hansborough played the same sport and were on the same team so I could hate them both at the same time. I've been thinking about my all-time, 'Fuck You Team'. The list so far includes the following: Tim Tebow, Tyler Hansborough, JJ Redick, Derek Jeter (late 90s, early 00s), Joakim Noah, failed Lions' draft picks (Harrington, Williams, and Rogers), and Roy Williams as coach. This is just the beginning of the list, so feel free to add-on. I'm sure Ahman Green and Brett Favre will make some peoples list...
~Wow, Wisconsin blowing out OSU by 20+? That'll make me reevaluate my thoughts on OSU finishing 2nd in the Big Ten this coming season. By the way, Bo Ryan is ridiculously underrated as a coach. All the guy does is win, in mother fucking Wisconsin nonetheless. His name should be mentioned when more high profile job openings come up, whether he's interested or not.
~This might be a Guinness World Record, but Jay Billas is still blowing the cocks of the Texas Longhorns. Ever since the MSU game, he's had their dicks in his mouth. What's that, 10 straight days of oral pleasure? Good job, Jay, I'm glad you're good at something, because you're not very good at being a very impartial and unbiased announcer. Seriously, when we were up 7 or 8 you were still loving on Texas. Fuck off. And yes, it's quite obvious I'm still hurt over that loss...I want a marquee win!
~Family Update #4: My brother Andy came back to Maryland with my dad, and while he was gone my mom cleaned his room for him. Andy is almost 17 now...and when you clean a teenage boy's room you are going to find some interesting things- like about 50 McDonald's trays. Apparently Andy and his friends stick these trays underneath the front tires of their cars, and when they gun the gas their cars will spin and do donuts. Kids these days, I tell ya. But I never had heard of people doing that before. Am I late to the party, or is this a new thing?
~Family Update #4 (continued): In continuing with the Andy room cleaning, my mom also looked inside Andy's ottoman...and found the thing filled with old moldy food. Fucking gross. I guess my mom gives Andy too much breakfast in the mornings, and Andy, instead of just throwing it away when my mom wasn't looking, stuffed it in his ottoman (and a couple random shoe boxes in his closet...I know...). It baffled all of us why he would let his ottoman get so moldy. I mean, he had 2 hours from the end of school until my mom got home, why not dispose of it then?
~I think I'm going to put a Craigslist ad out offering after school tutoring. I figure I could probably get $30+ an hour doing it, and even if I did it for only 3-4 hours a week, that's an extra $400 a month (untaxed). There's some stuff that I would like to get framed, but I never seem to have the extra cash I need to get them all done. This might be a great way to get that extra cash. My only problem is I stay late at school 4 out of the 5 days of the week, so I am pretty exhausted as it is. I don't want to wear myself out too much.
~I think Grace and I have a holiday tradition! On our trips back up to East Lansing, we always walk around campus and Grand River, and we always take our picture in front of the Beaumont Tower. I think it'll be fun to look at all our Christmas photos from years past down the road. Here's this year:
~I know next year's fantasy season is a ways off, but to me Chris Johnson is the clear number 1 pick. I know MJD and AP get TDs, but if you want the yards and TD combo, CJ is the choice. He has 20 more total fantasy points than AP, which is staggering. He's in a run-oriented offense, and should get you 1500 yards and 10+ TDs, without all the fumbles that AP comes with. I'd take him first.
~I just looked at the final fantasy point totals for my team. In looking at the RB point totals, Thomas Jones and Joseph Addai finished 5th and 6th respectively. Remarkable. Brady, Favre, and Schaub finished 4th, 5th, and 7th amongst QBs. Randy Moss was the number 1 wideout. Gates was the number 3 TE. And yet I couldn't make the playoffs...Kevin, play me that super small violin, please...
~Congrats to Stacey! I'm happy that the belt is staying within our "group". I do have to admit I was rooting for Kevin in the championship, though. Nothing against Stacey, and I know Kevin is happy just to not finish last, but Kevin really did put out a great team. He had a great draft with Rodgers, AP, and Gore, and had some tremendous FA pickups in Driver, Steve Smith, and Vince Young. It was a deserving team, to say the least. Kev, you've come a long way since your teams of Michael Vick and whatever Lions you could pickup. Although you were much easier to beat back then...
~You will never convince me that resting your starters is a good idea going into the playoffs, especially if you have a first round bye. Why would you get yourself out of the rhythm you're in? I know they're worried about injuries (which could happen in practice, it's football for Christ's sake), but as a coach I'd be more worried about coming out rusty that first game. If it's Week 17 and you're a little banged up, that's one thing. But if you're the Colts, and have Peyton Manning who never gets hurt or misses a fucking game, well, you're stupid. My two cents.
~My preseason prediction for the Super Bowl was Eagles versus Patriots. I don't feel overly confident with either team, but I'll stick with them.
~MSU plays Northwestern tonight in basketball at 6:30, and then Texas Tech (I wish Crabtree was still in college) at 9:00 in football. Could the schedule makers laid that out any better? On my birthday no less? That makes me happy.
Happy New Year everyone!

Christmas at my place was like hitting the "refresh" button. Since it was my nephew's first Christmas, it was fun seeing someone get all sorts of toys.
Big brothers are supposed to pick on little brothers, I think.
Hmm... an all time Fuck You Team? Those are definitely the starters from recent years. How about Claude Lemieux and Adam Morrison?
My friend Scott complained about Bilas' negative commentary during the Texas game. I don't recall him being that biased, but apparently he was.
I agree that Chris Johnson is the new #1. Adrian Peterson's stock probably goes down if Favre leaves.
I agree that resting your starters is too risky. If they get injured, why don't you just put them in a shed?
Big brothers are DEFINITELY supposed to pick on younger siblings.
Claude Lemieux (and Forsberg/Sakic/Roy) are all on my alltime sports-hate list. I fantasy-hate Ahman Green, but I'm indifferent in real sports-hate. Hansbrough and Reddick are on there, but not Tebow, Jeter, or any former Lions player. (although Charles Rogers comes close) My list also includes Gary Payton, Manu Ginobli, and Robert Horry.
As soon as one of your top players gets hurt in a meanigless game, you'll be convinced to rest them at the end of the season.
Chris Johnson is the #1 fantasy pick next year.
I definitely need to add Claude Lemieux.
Which do you think happens more often: A team gets bounced because they haven't played in 2-3 weeks, or a superstar player gets hurt? My guess is rust creeps in more often...
And don't be pussies. You're football players. Get out there and play!!!
I think neither happens very often.
I would guess that getting rusty happens more often, but getting a star player hurt has a greater chance of causing a playoff loss.
It's not that the players are being pussies. Given a choice, the players always want to play. It's purely a coaching decision.
I just think back a couple years ago when the Colts rested starters and the red hot Steelers came to their place and beat them and went on to win the Super Bowl...or the last two years against the Chargers...when will they learn that it's best to have momentum and everyone on the same page?
Resting your starters and becoming rusty is WAY worse than risking injury. You can't take your foot off the gas like that and get back to where you were. It just doesn't happen. Come next week, the Saints won't have played all out in almost a month.
